If anything, comedians should be locking arms and leading the charge in defense of speech, not spearheading efforts to curtail it.

Here’s a link explaining how Louis CK has abruptly pulled out of hosting the annual Washington dinner of the Radio & Television Correspondents’ Association on June 8th. While it would have been great seeing what he would have unleashed that night, I think we all know his act would have stirred up ton’s of bullshit controversy. 

Kudos to LCK for covering his ass and maintaining integrity once again. 

Comedian Jim Gaffigan is taking from Louis CK’s lead, and releasing his next special independently. Gaffigan will be selling DRM free copies of his next release for just $5. As predicted by us, this is a huge trend that is being furthered by comedians who want nothing to do with the networks and corporations. Here is the release on Gaffigan’s website:

Not going with a big corporation means I wont have any advertising. There will be no bells and whistles or billboards but maybe you can help. If you like the special, tell you friends to download it too. That’s the best kind of advertising anyway.

I must admit that I have not felt this excited and nervous since I first tried stand up over 100 years ago. It’s humbling to take a risk that you are not sure will work. You don’t know if a joke will bomb unless you try it.

If no one buys the special or if lots of people steal it then I suppose I will lose a lot of money and have egg on my face. But then again I have four kids so I am always losing money and usually have egg or some kind of food on my face so it might just feel normal.

The momentum continues for Louis CK, as he was awarded best comedy album of 2011 for Hilarious at this year’s Grammy Awards. LCK managed to beat out mainstream performers Kathy Griffin, Weird Al, Lonely Island, and our beloved Patton Oswalt. 

What’s next for LCK to accomplish?
